I am in the middle of Richard North Patterson's latest novel Eclipse, which is about a fictional country and a fictional oil corp, but is actually probably an astute look at the underlying crimes and tortures and murders, perpetrated by the brutal government (Nigeria) and the oil company (Shell.) In the novel a world renowned writer (Ken Saro Wiwa was a poet and noted environmentalist) chooses to return to his country and fight the crimes imposed on his people. Read this book because, so far, it adds a human reality to a true life story, which is nonetheless abstract due to distance and time. Patterson, a former lawyer, has written several expose-style novels. One of his more recent Conviction is unfortunately coming true today. A man now believed innocent is on death row and out of appeals (in Georgia I think.)
